descripción_ dos sentidos, dos percepciones de las cosas pero íntimamente relacionadas. lo que vemos y como lo oimos. abre los ojos y tápate los oídos... ahora cierra los ojos y escucha lo que ocurre a tu alrededor. escuchas algo que no puedes ver e imaginas como será. observas algo en la lejanía y te preguntas como sonará.

el rio, agua en movimiento que nos sugestiona y nos transporta. creamos en nuestra cabeza el sonido del agua discurriendo, cayendo, tropezando en las orillas, salpicando en las cascadas... pero algunas veces nada es lo que parece.

la sorpresa de un río, el Ljubljanica, sin sonido, casi estancado. un río que da vida a la ciudad. agua que lo inunda todo pero que pasa desapercibida. es un río silencioso, tímido, que trata de esconderse. 

proponemos recuperar el sonido del río, volver a escucharlo, entender de nuevo el paso del agua y del tiempo en constante cambio. se trata de crear una instalación al borde del río donde parase a escuchar, donde reconocer el continuo movimiento. una estructura suspendida sobre el agua, rozandola, dejandose acariciar por la corriente. pequeños filamentos chocando y tintineando entre si, creando una música... de nuevo el río.

la sorpresa de un sonido, el del trafico, tan presente en la vida en la ciudad. ensordecedor a veces, molesto siempre. los coches fluyendo por las calles en una corriente interminable. crean ríos, arroyos y riachuelos que llegan a todos los rincones, invadiendolo todo. 

proponemos un cambio de percepción, un experimento sensorial. que pasaria si el ruido del trafico, ese liquido imparable, dejara de ser molesto? que pasaria si creáramos una nueva imagen para este sonido? si dejáramos de ver los coches y en su lugar viéramos agua? se trata de proyectar la imagen del agua cayendo, de cascadas descontroladas y enfurecidas. un túnel repleto de trafico y una nueva imagen sugerente... que oyes ahora? coches o una cascada? sientes el humo saliendo violentamente de los tubos de escape o casi notas las gotas salpicandote?

nada es lo que parece! abre los ojos, escucha atentamente!!

description_ two senses, two different but intimately related perceptions are our sight and hearing. open your eyes and cover your ears... now close your eyes and listen to what is happening around you. you hear something you can not see and imagine how it will be. you look at something in the distance and wonder how it will sound. 

the concept of a river is clear to us. as we interact with it we believe in our head the sound of water running, falling, stumbling over banks, splashing in the waterfalls... but sometimes nothing is as it seems.

Ljubljanica river, which passes through the heart of the city, is silent, almost stagnant. a river that should give life to the city is shy and unnoticed. 

we propose to restore the sound and presence of the river to the city. we will create an installation by the river which interracts with the moving water and emphaises its changing nature with exaggerated sounds. the continuous movement and diversity of the citys' river shall be recaptured by this installatiion. a structure suspended above the water, brushed, caressed and manipulated by the waters current. small strands colliding and jingling with each other, creating a music... again the river will become present.

traffic noise, so present in life in the  city. annoying, deafening at times, it flows through the streets in an endless stream. rivers, streams and creeks of disturbance reach all corners of the city, invading everything.  

we propose a shift in perception, a sensory experiment. what would happen if traffic noise would stop being annoying? could they even be appreciated. we will attempt to create a new image for this sound? if we fail to see cars and instead we saw water? how will our perception of the traffic change? If we projected an image of falling water, an waterfall even against the wall of a tunnel filled with traffic, what do you hear now? a car or a  waterfall? what do you experience? the violent smoke being thrown coming out of exhaust pipes or water drops with their euphoric splashing notes?

nothing is what it seems! open your eyes, listen!

descripción_ de pie en la orilla del mar bañado por el sol, envuelto en su insoportable e incesante calor y azotado por la abrasadora brisa del mar. necesitas refugio. necesitas consuelo del brillo abrumador, una forma de escape del siempre presente sol de medianoche. necesitas un lugar donde tu aliento sea fresco, donde tus pensamientos no sean dominados por el calor, donde la luz no sea invasiva, donde se puede pensar, donde puedas encontrar la tranquila soledad e incluso dormir. 
al entrar en el pabellón te pierdes en la oscuridad. la luz todavía invade el espacio a través de las grietas y aberturas del edificio pero ya no lo abarca ni consume todo. tus ojos se adaptan lentamente a medida que te aclimatas a este reino de oscuridad y al sentir el suave soplo de aire fresco que cepilla tu piel te das cuenta que estas en un mundo mágico. observando estas vetas intensas de luz en la oscuridad, cambian la forma, alteran el humor, la atmósfera te induce y de repente te golpea con el paso del día. sales del espacio con una recien adquirida energía para enfrentarte al intenso sol de nuevo. 
tanto espacio se pierde en la urbanizada vida diaria. espacio perdido no por estar inutilizado, sino más bien por perder la oportunidad de traducir y transformar lo ordinario en algo sereno, hermoso y edificante. luz siempre presente en nuestra vida a menudo desperdiciada. no logramos comprender su profundidad ni nos damos cuenta de su potencial. ya no vemos la luz como una herramienta principal que se podría utilizar para transformar y reorganizar el espacio en cierto sentido, en una experiencia profunda, bella e intensa. pasamos por alto y damos por sentado su maravilloso impacto. en los países nordicos, durante el verano, la luz es siempre una constante. luz sin fin, por así decirlo. gran parte de esta iluminación natural se pierde por las personas en el trascurso de su vida cotidiana pero sin embargo se esfuerzan por hacer frente a esta luz. invade y penetra su propia existencia y se convierte en algo que todo lo consume y domina.
proponemos trabajar con esta luz perdida y poner de manifiesto la necesidad de la oscuridad en un mundo de brillo extremo y generalizado. el workshop verá la luz como un material y se centrará en ello, y experimentará con ella mediante su captación y transformación. el pabellón final será un lugar donde dormir o un área de relax donde poder escapar de esta constante luz y obtener el necesario espacio de oscuridad y tranquilidad. la construcción de pabellón en sí mismo no es el objetivo principal del workshop. sino que actuará como una herramienta, para demostrar cómo se puede capturar y experimentar con la luz como material de partida. el resultado será que el estudiante deberá entender las posibilidades que ofrece la luz dentro de ciertos parámetros y condiciones. lo posible y lo probable rápidamente se haran evidentes. El workshop se iniciará con una serie de pruebas a pequeña escala y experimentos centrados en el aprendizaje de nuestro medio ambiente a través de la observación de las condiciones existentes. podremos observar también cómo las largas horas en constante exposición a la luz solar afecta a las personas de Helsinki psicológica y físicamente y estudiar las formas en que podemos hacer frente a esta luz desperdiciada. el workshop culminará con una pequeña construcción que reflejará los resultados de este estudio. en ningún momento partiremos de nociones preconcebidas de cómo el proyecto debe evolucionar ni incluso del pabellón final. la experimentación y la participación en el proyecto en todas las etapas es necesaria, y puede afectar el resultado final. este será un proyecto evolutivo, con metas establecidas que no serán necesariamente inamovibles, pero donde la evolución y el cambio son bienvenidos. prevemos que el proyecto final será un espacio de bella oscuridad, mágico, y estimulante. donde la gente va a ir no sólo para escapar del sol, sino para descubrir un lugar donde la luz y su impacto sean entendidas. un nirvana de oscuridad en el que la gente se cuestione su relación con el sol, la estacionalidad de su vida y su lugar dentro de esa realidad.

description_ standing on the seashore you are at once bathed in sunlight, engulfed in its ceaseless unbearable heat  and whipped by a scorching sea breeze. you need shelter. you need solace from its overpowering brightness an escape from the ever present midnight sun. you need a place where your very breath is cool, where your thoughts are not overpowered by heat, where the light is non invasive, where you can think, where you can find tranquil solitude and even sleep. 
as you enter the pavilion you become lost in the darkness. light still invades the space through crack and slits in the building but no longer is it all encompassing, all consuming. your eyes adjust slowly as you acclimatise to this dark realm and as you feel the gentle waft of cool air  brush your skin you realise you are in a magical world. observing these intense streaks of light in the darkness, shape changing, mood altering, atmosphere inducing you suddenly are struck with the day’s passing. you depart the space with a newly gained energy to confront the intense sun once more. 
so much space is lost in daily urbanized life. space lost not through  being under utilized or unusable but rather through unseized opportunity in  translating and transforming that ordinariness  into something serene, beautiful and uplifting. light so ever present in out lives is all to often wasted. we fail to grasp its depth or indeed to realise its potential. we no longer look on light as a primary tool that could be used in transforming and reshaping space into a meaningful, deep, beautiful and intense experience. we overlook and take for granted its heavenly impact. in the northern countries, during summer, light is always a  constant. light without end, so to speak. so much of this natural illumination is lost as people progress with their normal lives but in turmoil they endeavour to cope with this light. it invades and pervades their very existence and becomes all consuming and dominant. 
we propose to work with this wasted light and to highlight the necessity for darkness in a world of extreme and pervasive brightness. the workshop would view the light as a material and will focus on its, and  experiment with it by capturing and transforming it. the final pavilion will be a sleeping pod or relaxation area where one can escape this constant light and get much needed dark space and tranquil oblivion. the pavilion construction in itself is not the main objective of the workshop. rather it will act as a tool, to demonstrate how one can capture and experiment with light as a source material. the resultant outcome will be that the student should better understand and grasp the possibilities afforded by light within certain  parameters and conditions. what is possible and what is probable should quickly become evident. the workshop will begin with a series of small scale tests and experiments that are focused on learning our environment through close observations of existing conditions. we will observe also how the long hours of constant exposure to sunlight affects the people of Helsinki psychologically and physically and study ways that we can deal with this wasted light. the workshop will culminate in  a small build which will reflect our findings from this study. at no stage will we have preconceived notions of how the project should pan or indeed the pavilion end up. much like cadiz last year on going experimentation and project involvement at all stages can but  affect the final outcome. this will be an evolutionary project with set goals that will not be necessarily cast in stone but where evolution and change are welcomed. we envisage that the final project will emerge into a space that is beautifully dark, magical, and life changing. where people will go not only to escape the sun intrusiveness but discover a place where light and its impact is understood. a nirvana of blackness within which people will question their relationship with the sun, the seasonality of their lives and their place within that reality.

entras en la niebla.

poco a poco apartas capa a capa de blancura descubriendo el espacio. Los planos son mecidos por el viento, influenciados por el movimiento de figuras fantasmales. quedas hipnotizado por las sombras en continuo cambio y por las luces brillantes que tratan de perforar esta flotante masa blanca. Vagas a través de la nube con la esperanza de descubrir los secretos que esconde. a medida que te pierdes en ella, confundido e intrigado, tu mismo te difuminas y pasas a formar parte de una exposición en constante movimiento y transformación.

cuando te adentras más profundamente y tropiezas con ocasionales claros y pasajes entre capas, lentamente empiezas a entender qué es real y qué es simplemente una sombra.

dentro de la niebla.

la niebla es un sólido que lo envuelve todo.

planos de malla de fibra de vidrio, un material de construcción simple y asequible, (reutilizable tras la vida útil del pabellón ya que los paneles permanecen intactos)  se colocan en capas, para crear una nube ligera bajo la pesada sombra del puente. fragmentos de vidrio reciclado relucen y crujen bajo tus pies, convirtiendo a los visitantes en invisibles aunque audibles.

algunos vacíos tallados en el sólido, varían en dimensiones, proporciones, ambientes y crean patrones donde albergar exposiciones y ser exposiciones en si mismos.

you enter mist.

you slowly push away layers upon layers of whiteness as you discover the space. as the planes slowly stir in the wind and sway from the movement of the ghostlike figures within, you get enchanted by the constantly changing broken shadows and by the shimmering lights that try to pierce through this floating white mass. you wander through this cloud, in hope of discovering the secrets hidden within. as you get lost in it,confused and intrigued, you, yourself, blur into it and become a part of the exposition, constantly moving and transforming.

as you enter deeper and stumble upon occasional clearings and passageways within the layers, you slowly start to understand what is real and what is merely a shadow.

the mist is a solid, hovering over the whole site.

planes of fibreglass mesh, a construction material, simple and affordable (reusable after the pavillions lifespan as the panels remain untouched), are layered, to create a weightless, cloudlike entity below a heavy shadow of the bridge. broken recycled glass glistenes below and crunches underfoot, making visitors invisible yet audible.

intimate cloud like voids are carved out of the solid, varying in dimensions, proportions, ambientes, creating needles patterns to hold expositions and be expositions themselves.

descripción_la idea de usar espejo como material para la instalación surgió como deseo de experimentar con el paisaje, mas que como idea constructiva. el proyecto no es importante en si mismo, sino mas bien su relación con el lugar. mirror lab es simplemente una herramienta para explorar y capturar las vistas y así disolverse completamente en el paisaje. con una simple inserción en el puente, mirror lab añade una nueva dimensión. desde dentro del arco, dobla e invierte el espacio y desde fuera, captura y enmarca las vistas. la puerta, con el giro en su eje central, permite al visitante interactuar y formar parte de la instalación, explorando ambos paisajes, el real y el reflejado.

description_ the idea of exploring the mirror for the installation has grown from the desire to capture, explore and experiment with the landscape, rather than the built form. the project itself is not important on it's not, as much as is its relationship with the site. the mirrorlab is merely a tool to explore and capture the views of the existing and by doing so it becomes invisible, completely dissolving into the landscape. a simple insertion into the bridge, solely supported by the two points, mirrorlab adds a new dimension to the site, both inside the arc by doubling and inverting the space, and outside by capturing and framing the views. pivoting through the centre, the door allows the visitors to interact with and become part of the installation, immersing themselves into and exploring both the real and the reflected landscapes.
